THE GUGGENHEIM ELSEWHERE PRESENTS "JESSICA DOLENZ: INSIDE OUTSIDE" OPENING AUGUST 11 2007
(GREENSBORO, NC – August 11, 2007) –Guggenheim Elsewhere presented the most comprehensive survey to date of the innovative body of work of Jessica Dolenz. Designed as a spectacular site-specific installation within the museum’s galleries, the exhibition presented a chronological and thematic survey that charts the artist’s creation of a distinctive visual and conceptual language. This exhibition illuminates Jessica's significant formal and conceptual contributions to contemporary international art practices and social activism.
The exhibition is organized by Carolyn Porter, Artist in Residence, Guggenheim Elsewhere, in close collaboration with the artist. Following its Greensboro opening, the exhibition is expected to travel to Beijing to coincide with the Beijing Olympics in August 2008, and to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in spring 2008. The exhibition opening was well attended, with international scholars and artists taking part in a fete-celebre for the artist.

THE SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES DEPARTURE OF DAN STEELE, DIRECTOR OF THE GUGGENHEIM ELSEWHERE MUSEUM
(GREENSBORO, August 11, 2007)
On 10 August, Thomas Krens, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, announced the resignation of Dan Steele, Director of the Guggenheim Museum Elsewhere. Mr. Steele has accepted a position at Sotheby’s as Executive Vice President of Sotheby’s North America.
The Board of Trustees and senior management are forming a search committee and preparing a plan for interim leadership of the Museum. George Scheer and Stephanie Sherman, Directors of Elsewhere Artists Collaborative, will serve as interim directors of the Museum beginning August 11, reporting to Mr. Krens and the board, as did Mr. Steele.
“Daniel Steele has proved to be one of the Guggenheim’s greatest assets,” said Mr. Krens. “When I first came to the Guggenheim, Daniel was an assistant curator. He has flourished over the years, assuming an increasingly important leadership role in the international development of the Guggenheim. During his tenure as director, Daniel has strengthened the visibility and reputation of the Guggenheim Museum as an extraordinary cultural resource and helped the Museum realize its institutional goals as the flagship of our global network. We wish him the greatest success in his new endeavors.”
“We are very grateful to Dan for his tremendous contributions and we wish him well,” said William Mack, Chairman of the Foundation. “Recruiting his successor will be a priority for the board and we will begin that process immediately.”
“It has been an honor to serve the Guggenheim for almost 29 years,” said Steele. “I am proud of the Guggenheim staff, which manages one of the world's most successful and
important art museums. I know they are ready to create an even more exciting future. The development department has been revitalized, and we have a strong and creative curatorial faculty, who are already developing new initiatives related to Southeastern American art, and to architecture.”
Prior to his appointment as Director of the Museum in September 2005, Mr. Steele had been Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Guggenheim since 1996, and was a member of the Curatorial Department since 1978, during which time he organized 35 major exhibitions and helped to strengthen the permanent collection.
From its headquarters in New York City, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation operates museums in New York City, Bilbao (Spain), Venice (Italy), Berlin (Germany), Greensboro (North Carolina) and Las Vegas (Nevada), welcoming more than 2.5 million annually.
